Syncing News and Prayer

It has been nearly four years since I last picked up a newspaper, but in the past month, I decided to take up the habit once again. This return reminded me of the reasons I had initially given it up: the hurt, the hypocrisy, and the overwhelming deluge of information that often felt more like "infotainment" than actual news. Some days, the pain and suffering depicted in the articles were so overwhelming that I struggled to finish reading. I worried that I would become desensitized, reducing extraordinary tragedies to mere phrases like "it's normal" or "that's life." In moments of despair, I turned to Psalm 55:22, which says, "Cast your burden on the Lord..." and I endeavored to do just that.

A Divine Perspective

The Lord is always faithful, and He gently reminded me that each article in the newspaper represents real people—individuals for whom Jesus Christ, our Savior, sacrificed His life on the cross. Each person, whether a victim or an accused, is made in the image of God, and I have no authority to judge them based on their circumstances. This realization transformed my perspective. I discovered a new calling in this simple act of reading the news: to pray without judgment for those who are suffering, for those in bereavement, and even for those who have committed crimes. I began to pray that the Lord would enter their hearts and touch their lives, initiating change and love on a profound level.

Turning News into Prayer

Now, when I read about a vehicular accident, I pray for the injured and for the families who have lost loved ones, asking the Lord to comfort them in their grief. When I come across a medical breakthrough, I express gratitude for the wisdom bestowed upon scientists to make such discoveries. In the face of reports about rape, murder, physical abuse, or drug-related crimes, I pray not only for the victims and their families but also for the accused, asking the Lord to touch their hearts and bring about miraculous change.

The greater the crime, the greater the miracle I hope for and pray towards.

A Call to Action

1 Timothy 2:1-4  says "I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth."

I invite you to transform your routine act of reading the newspaper or scrolling through Google News into a battlefield of prayer. This world desperately needs our prayers, and by doing so, we can contribute to the healing and restoration that so many individuals and communities require. Let us remember that every headline tells a story, and every story is an opportunity to intercede on behalf of those in need.

Waiting on the Lord: From Restlessness to Rest

Isaiah 40:31 "But those who wait  on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not be faint."           Patience is a great virtue, but it has never been my cup of tea. I have always struggled to sit still or remain idle, which made it especially difficult for me to truly surrender everything into God’s control. Yet, when faced with important life choices and uncertainty about how to move forward, I realized that the Lord, who created heaven and earth, is a far better planner than I could ever be. He knows each of my days before even one comes to pass, so why not entrust my life into His capable hands?           With this realization, I decided to wait for His direction, understanding that His ways are higher than mine and that He leads us through experiences that always result in growth and learning. Waiting on the Lord, I discover...
